Packing Cubes 101: How I Fit 130 Items of Clothing for 5 People Into One Suitcase

Are packing cubes actually worth it, or are they just another travel gadget collecting dust in your closet? I get asked this constantly, so I decided to put them to the ultimate test on a family trip — and the results genuinely surprised me. Keep reading to see exactly how many packing cubes it took to fit 130 clothing items for five people into a single suitcase, plus everything I wish I’d known before buying my first set.

What Are Packing Cubes, and Why Do You Need Them?

If you’ve never used them, packing cubes are simple zippered fabric pouches that come in a few sizes and let you sort your clothes into compact, organized bundles before they go into your suitcase. Instead of one big jumbled pile of clothes, you get:

  • More usable space for shoes, toiletries, and everything else that fights for room in your bag
  • Compression that lets you pack noticeably more without needing a bigger suitcase
  • Built-in organization so you’re not digging through a mess to find one shirt
  • Fewer wrinkles, since clothes are folded and held snugly in place instead of shifting around.

The 4 Questions Everyone Asks About Packing Cubes

Before I bought my first set, I had the same questions you probably do:

  1. Do packing cubes really maximize space? Yes.
  2. Can you really fit that much in them? Yes — and I’ll show you exactly how much.
  3. Does color-coding by person actually help? Double yes. This is a game-changer for families.
  4. Will they help prevent wrinkles? Mostly — folding technique still matters, but cubes definitely help

The Real-Life Test: Packing for 5 People in One Suitcase

Here’s the trip that put packing cubes to the test. We headed to Austin to pick up our son Jonathan from Patriot Academy. Since Jonathan and my husband Joe both needed their own suitcases (Jonathan already had his from a longer stay, and Joe was staying on for work), that left me to pack for myself and our three other kids — Victoria, Jamieson, and Caroline — in just one suitcase and a bag.

Everything We Packed, By the Numbers

To show just how much packing cubes can hold, I laid out every single item before packing it. For reference, my dining room table seats six people — and it was completely covered.

Here is what I packed for each person. Joe : 15 shirts, 5 pair of pants, 2 shorts, 1 pajama pant, 9 pairs of underware, and 9 pairs of socks, plus his complete suit. Jamieson : 5 shirts, 2 pants, 2 shorts, 1 pajama pant, 1 pajama short, 3 underware, 3 pairs of socks. Caroline : 5 shirts, 6 pair of shorts, 2 dresses, 1 jumper, 1 pair of pajamas, 1 pajama short, 3 panties, 5 pair of socks. Victoria : 5 shirts, 4 shorts, 1 dress, 1 pair pajamas, 3 bras, 3 panties, 4 pair of socks. Candise : 6 shirts, 2 shorts, 4 dresses, 2 pair of pajama’s, 3 bras, 6 panties, 4 socks.

Grand total: 130 items — 36 shirts, 7 pairs of pants, 16 shorts, 6 pairs of pajamas, 2 pajama shorts, 24 pairs of underwear, 25 pairs of socks, 7 dresses, 1 jumper, and 6 bras. (And that’s without the beach towels I decided to leave behind!)

How Many Packing Cubes Did it Actually Take?

All 130 items fit into 10 packing cubes, with swimsuits stashed separately in a snorkel bag. We also packed a hanging bag with Joe’s suit, my dress, and one outfit for Caroline that needed to stay wrinkle-free.

Of those 10 cubes, 7 fit into the main suitcase alongside a sound machine, jewelry bag, makeup bag, and toiletry bag — with three cubes left over that weren’t even full. All the shoes went into a separate carry-on bag.

Final tally for six people traveling: 2 suitcases, 1 carry-on, and 2 backpacks.

The Bonus Benefit Nobody Tells You About

Once we got to the hotel, the kids simply pulled their individual packing cubes straight out of the suitcase and slid them into a dresser drawer. No unpacking, no refolding, no clothes exploding across the hotel room — just instantly organized drawers. This alone made packing cubes worth it for a family trip.

And when it was time to head home? I packed Joe’s dirty laundry into the now-empty cubes, which meant we fit four and a half people’s worth of clothing into one suitcase for the whole trip.

So, Are Packing Cubes Worth It?

For our family, it’s a resounding yes. They gave us more usable suitcase space, kept four kids’ clothes separated and organized, and made unpacking at the hotel (and repacking dirty laundry) nearly effortless. I’m already planning to get each of the kids their own set in different colors to make travel even easier.

If you’re on the fence, my honest advice is to try a set on your next trip — you may be surprised how much space you get back. Check out my Amazon packing cube recommendations to find a set that works for your family.
